In India, the ITC Project is called the TCP (Tobacco Control Policy) India Survey.
Wave 1 Field work of the TCP India Survey is expected to start in July 2010. This survey is expected to have 3 waves in four states of India (Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh). In each state we plan to survey the principal or capital city and four surrounding rural villages. Sample size per state will be 2000 tobacco users (smoked and smokeless tobacco), and 600 non-users of tobacco, N=10,400.

Smoking Prevalence and Related Costs:
- According to WHO report on the global tobacco epidemic 2009, 33% of men versus 1% of women used cigarettes, bidi or any other smoked tobacco products.
- In India, bidi smoking is the most popular form of tobacco product. Smokeless tobacco is the second most common form of tobacco used, followed by cigarette smoking.
- In 2006, 17.3% of males and 9.7% of females between age 13-15 used tobacco products.
- About 1 million people die due to tobacco use annually in India.
- The total cost of tobacco use in 2004 was estimated at 1.7 billion USD - not including premature mortality costs .
Smoking Policies:
Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertising and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act 2003
- Ban on smoking in public places;
- Ban on advertisements of tobacco products;
- Prohibition of sale of tobacco products to and by minors; and
- Specified health warning labels on all tobacco products
- FCTC was ratified in February 2004
- Since October 2008, smoking has been banned in government buildings, private worksites, educational facilities, and healthcare facilities; and has been restricted in restauraunts, nightclubs and bars, and in other public places
- Advertising, promotion, and sponsorship has also been banned since October 2008
- The "Packaging and Labelling" rules came into force on May 31, 2009 targeting smoked tobacco and other hewing/smokeless tobacco products
- New graphic health warnings to be implemented in December 2010
