Key Findings

ITC Policy Reports present plain language syntheses of ITC project findings on specific tobacco control policy themes. The reports are intended to provide evidence to policymakers on the effective implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

Cessation

This report highlights the findings from several ITC cessation studies that were published in the October 2010 supplement of Nicotine and Tobacco Research, as well as other published ITC research. ITC project findings support Article 14 Guidelines on Tobacco Dependence and Cessation as they provide evidence of a high global demand for cessation, yet low rates of physician and other health professional advice to quit smoking in many countries and the efficacy of Quitline campaigns for those most in need of help. The report was disseminated at the Fourth Conference of the Parties (COP-4) to the WHO FCTC in Punta del Este, Uruguay where Parties adopted Article 14 Guidelines on November 19, 2010.

Warning Labels

This report was prepared for the May 2009 World No Tobacco Day whose theme focused on pictorial warning labels. The report concludes from longitudinal studies of text and pictorial warnings across many ITC countries that large pictorial warnings are more effective than text-only warnings. The findings provide compelling evidence of the effectiveness of pictorial warnings and support the case for strong implementation of the FCTC Article 11 Guidelines which recommend pictorial warnings on at least 50% of the package.

Tobacco Labelling Resource

This website was created by Dr. David Hammond, Associate Professor in the Dept. of Health Studies and Gerontology at the University of Waterloo, to help promote effective, evidence-based packaging and labelling policies in support of Article 11 of the FCTC. The website was developed with the support of the Framework Convention Alliance and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.
