Data Requests

This is a critical time in tobacco control policy research. The ITC team is committed to capturing valuable data in countries alongside policy changes as FCTC articles are implemented.

Internal Researchers

If you are affiliated with the ITC project and you require access to data, you must complete an ITC Internal Data Usage Agreement.

"Internal researchers" includes but is not limited to: graduate students, ITC project staff, and investigators seeking access to any data besides that of their own country project. Principal investigators are given automatic access to their own country-specific data.  Internal researchers may request data immediately, as they are not subject to the two-year moratorium.

External Researchers

If you are a researcher not affiliated with the ITC project and you wish to request a subset of ITC data, please familiarize yourself with your survey(s) of interest and their variables (see Research Methods). There is a 2-year moratorium on the data from the date of internal release before it can be requested by external researchers. Currently, external researchers may request access to Waves 1 to 4 of the Four Country project (United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia). Researchers should request subsets of ITC survey data by variable name, wave number, and country.

1) Researchers should carefully read the eligibility and conditions of use for ITC data in the ITC Data Request Guidelines.

Note: ITC data will not be approved for use by the tobacco industry, or any person affiliated with the industry. Also note that the ITC Data Management Core must be notified of any publications or other products that result from the analysis of ITC data. External researchers are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the expertise of members on the ITC team.

2) Once you have reviewed the ITC Data Request Guidelines, you should complete an ITC Data Request Application. This application can be submitted electronically to: itcdata@healthy.uwaterloo.ca

3) One you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by the ITC management group. Once the group has decided whether to approve your application, you will receive notification of their decision. If your application was approved you will then be required to complete the ITC External Data Usage Agreement.

This agreement must also be signed by internal ITC researchers, to fulfill the requirements of upholding the confidentiality of ITC survey participants as approved through the University of Waterloo Office of Research Ethics.
